Wednesday 16th March – snow shoe ***** Circuit A Travers Les Alpages (
Commune de Bernex ) cloudy – ( 4.25 miles )
One day’s skiing is probably enough on the super-fast steep Thollon runs
so when we woke to light snow and low cloud our minds were made up to move
on. After a bit of a lay in and porridge we headed up to the Sherpa for a
few supplies and were amused when a middle aged English man asked a much
older English couple if they were going to the Tea Dance! We know it was
definitely time to move on!!! This resort seems to be a home for ageing UK
skiers which is a bit odd considering it’s a hard place to ski!
With a bit of spare time we walked the short distance to the Tourist office
for an hour’s free Wi-Fi where I checked our emails and put a few pics on
Facebook, wishing my sister a Happy Birthday too:)
We then drove the short distance to Bernex the next little ski resort along
turning up to Trossy looking for the Pont de Morgan and the start of a 2
hour 30 minute, 6 km snow shoe walk and lucky for use we drove straight
there parking just over the bridge in a restaurant car park at La
Chevrette.
It was very beautiful with the trees on the whole route covered in a light
dusting of snow, the only thing lacking was a clear blue sky meaning we
couldn’t see the stunning mountain peaks which surround the walk! We
started walking up a dead end road and only had to put on our snow snows
when we ran out of tarmac as the road turned into a narrow track. It was
there that 6 French walkers passed us coming down. It was a steady uphill
walk alongside a mountain stream and when we reached our turning point at
another La Frasse the path became steep and was slow going, we were
overtaken by a couple of French lady walkers and a ski tourer! The path was
covered in tracks where people had skied down off piste and all the time we
were looking for a spot for our lunch as we were starving by now. At last
we found a spot at Le Tirou which had a couple of old barns, there was a
family group here enjoying the snow, the father and son were even walking
up the roofs of the snowy barns! It was downhill all the way now and was
stunning, narrow paths surrounded by snowy catkins and beautiful old
chalets. We started to hear some noise for the first time and when the
cloud cleared we could see the ski runs of Bernex and came out right by a
button lift at Malpasset were we had to walk down the road for a short
distance before crossing over a bridge over yet another rocky stream and
headed down the icy path and back to our van! The 2.30 hr walk took us 4.25
hrs but it was great fun and we had stopped a lot to admire the view and
eat lunch. We quickly put our gear in the van and headed down to Bernex
looking for somewhere to stop the night. We drove around Bernex to start
with but that’s nothing special just a sprawling mass of chalets, a
church and a shop! The ski station was not very welcoming with a no camper
van sign at the entrance to the vast carpark:( We headed to the recommended
camper parking which was very muddy so said sod it and after much riding
around looking for a place to park we decided to take a chance at the
station carpark as it is almost completely empty!
Although the cloud was low making skiing not much fun there seemed to be
several out including a couple of busloads of kids just going home, we will
ski tomorrow if the weather is good and you can even get 5hrs here for 19
Euros – so fingers crossed for some sunshine.
Mag made a top tea of homemade mince sausages and mash potatoes and it’s
all quiet in the carpark, so fingers crossed we are not asked to move
on!
